0415 — Random late night AIM chatting led to a reservation made at Brenner’s Steakhouse on the Bayou. Gotta love those late minute dates right? I made some reservations on Opentable and entered some instructions for the restaurant, “I plan on taking photos of the food, please seat us away from other patrons so I don’t disturb them.” We dropped off the car at the valet service, and walked up the stairs to be greeted by the hostess who led us to our table which certainly away from everyone, but it also overlooked everyone else. Our table was the single table that overlooked the restaurant halfway in between the first and second story (READ: VERY INTERESTING TABLE! lol) After getting over our fears that everyone was staring at us, we looked over the menu and decided on what we wanted.

For appetizers we went with the Texas Quail (Bacon Wrapped Texas Quail Finished W/ A Chipotle Maple Glaze). Nothing much to say about this dish, it’s bacon, and I love bacon! For entree duties my date went with the Center Cut Filet Salad (Ancho Dusted Center Cut Filet Sliced Over Mesclun Green Salad W/ Pecans, Sun-Dried Tomoates, Carrots, Cotija Cheese & Red Wine Vinaigrette). A very long name and description for what I saw as an expensive salad, but it was tasty although the Medium prepared steak was a bit overcooked for my liking. I went with the safe choice with Chef Grant’s Land & Sea (Jack Daniel’s Smoked Berkshire Pork Short Rib Paired W/ Fresh Gulf Snapper a

ccompanied By Jalapeño Smoked Cheddar Mashed Potatoes). The pork short ribs were decent and the meat fell right off the bones as expected however they were lacking a real punch to make it memorable. The same can’t be said for the gulf snapper which had a strong mustard taste while not being overpowering, coupled with the tomatoes and capers the fish was near perfect. The jalapeno smoked cheddar mashed potatoes surprised me as well, the flavors came from out of no where along with some corn that snuck into the mix. Accompanying our entrees were a nice small pot of macaroni and cheese, if you read my previous take on the ruggles green interpretation of mac and cheese then tasting the iteration at Brenner’s made the Ruggles Green version amateur at best.

When the meal was all complete I was satisfied with what I finished on the plates in front of me. The mac and cheese saved the meal for me, while the entree was great I felt slightly disappointed with the short rib, but was completely happy with the fish. The decor is amazing, the rear patio bar BLUE looked interesting, although from my table I got a great view of the moon and her friends. I will definitely have to come check out BLUE and their patio specials.

3/5: Great service, Decent food and the atmosphere to make you want to come back for more
