0527 — A few weeks have come and gone since learning about their soft shell crab offerings, the last time I wanted to venture out to Bellaire for Mexican food, I called and they unfortunately told me they sold out and had no idea when they were going to get more. Since my lunch buddy Katie wanted some Mexican food today and was limited to seafood offerings, it looked like she was in store for some seafood enchiladas. Fortunately for me, I had no restrictions which let my stomach run wild. Looking over the menu, nothing really jumped out at me aside from the $3 lunch margaritas, but alas (!?!) “I wonder if they have the soft shell crabs in today!” I asked the waitress who checked to confirm for me, and she came back with a resounding “YES!” So now my choice was made up for me, Soft Shell Crabs please.
While waiting for the crabs, we nom’ed on the chips which seemed like small shards of cardboard, not tasty at all. 10 minutes later my glorious crabs arrived and I went to town, A simple garlic garnish and a small side salad accompanied the crabs. The crabs were tasty! I loved the simple garlic on top of the SSC, added just the right amount of flavor to contrast the crunch. Everything seemed too good to be true and I was definitely right as the bill arrived. In my rush to order the SSC, I failed to ask about the price. When the bill arrived, the $32 price tag made the wallet cringe in fear. The dish was great, but no where near worth the $32 price tag attached to it! I’ll have to save up to eat here for the next round lol.
3/5: Great Soft Shell Crab with a shocking price tag.

0527 — Well, I had the day off again today and I decided to wake my ass up earlier than normal and head over to Melange Creperie with my parents. Mom wanted to tag along because she previously read Alison Cook’s article about Melange in the Chronicle, and she was a bit reminiscent about her time in Paris a while back. When we arrived, “Buffalo Sean” was finishing making crepes for some guys that were already there, so my Mom and I started to look over today’s menu, an ALT (Avocado, Lettuce and Tomato), Tomato Caprese, Ham Egg and Cheese, Honeydew and Lemon Curd and Banana Nutella graced the chalkboard this early afternoon. Mom and I both decided on the Ham, Egg and Cheese crepe with the Honeydew and Lemon Curd and Banana Nutella crepes to close out for the dessert duty. Each crepe took around 5 minutes to complete from first ladle to final foil wrap and handoff, not a bad wait time at all considering you get a private mini art showcase with a gracious host in a single presentation. The Cheese in the Ham, Egg and Cheese was supremely hot and gushed out when you get into the heart of the crepe and was a great way to start the afternoon. At first I was a bit hesitant with the Honeydew and Lemon Curd combo, however the combination works incredibly well, but I have a special place in my heart and stomach for Nutella. Combining it with bananas just makes it even better. It reminded me of the first time I saw the combo at another restaurant down the street, Poscal. I just had to have it, and like the Poscal Nutella Panini offering, I am going to venture to say the Melange iteration is the best one so far. Do whatever you have to do to get to this food stand before they close at their usual 12:30-1:00pm. Remember to bring cash too..!
4/5: A tasty and entertaining experience at Melange Creperie!
