111810 — As if travelling around town to try some food trucks didn’t make my day brighter, I decided to get together with 6 other friends for some omakase action with Seth Siegel-Gardner, Kata Robata’s newest addition for next level food in Houston. While I wasn’t able to get a reservation with his previous pop-up project JustAugust, I was previously exposed to his creations at the Summer Repast.

As we arrived around 730 to Kata Robata we sat down and waited for a few stragglers as we told Seth about any food allergies or things we couldn’t handle. Aside from preservatives, everyone was pretty open to anything he wanted to throw at us. A few minutes later and the 8 course omakase adventure started.

4 cold dishes, 4 hot dishes.

4/5: As if Kata Robata wasn’t amazing enough, Seth joins the team to get us to the next level in Houston, I can’t wait to go back for more.

Oh My Pocket Pies

111810 — In an attempt to figure out some places that my girlfriend and I haven’t visited, I decided to head out to some of the food trucks that are scattered around Houston. I’ve heard wonderful things about the brick and mortar locations of Sylvia’s so I was excited to try out their new “No Borders” truck located on Washington right outside of Rebel’s Honky Tonk.

As we pulled up to the No Borders truck around 12:30pm there was a small wait, we looked over the menu and decided on the Texas Turkey Torta as well as the Beef Fajita Tacos with Habanero Salsa. The turkey torta was the perfect culmination of what I expect to make after the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. A nice moist piece of Turkey between some soft jalapeno bread and we have a definite winner. My girlfriend chose a set of beef fajita tacos. The habanero was a wise and spicy choice, it had her running for some diet coke almost immediately. A welcome added spice to start the day.

From the No Borders truck we made our way over to Oh My Pocket Pies which at the time was located at the m2 gallery in the heights. I previously read some tweets that they were offering a Thanksgiving pie filled with stuffing and turkey with a side of cranberry, and I wanted it (lol). My girlfriend decided it was dessert time and ordered a Banana Cream pie. A short wait later and we had the pies in our hands. A bonus Chilie Relleno pie made its way to accompany my Thanksgiving pie as well. My hands down favorite was the Thanksgiving pie, it might be the fact that I love stuffing or the fact that I love cranberry or maybe its just because I’m plain excited about Thanksgiving and eating more.

In any case, it was a great lunch at both food trucks!

110410 — It’s that time of the month again and Strip House Houston brought another great pairing just in time to combat the cold cold weather in Houston. I always seem to end up at these events with a friend, and each time I get to convince a new friend just how great Strip House really is. This time around, they did a pairing with Glenlivet that offered their line of Scotch with a sampling of Strip House fare.

Upon arrival at close to 7 we were greeted with some Glenlivet Washington Apple cocktails that was quite refreshing, somewhat unlike what you expect from Scotch. After some time in the bar area we were escorted to the back room filled with over 60 guests waiting for their Glenlivet, luckily some was already waiting at the table for us as we prepped for the first course. As each course came, we were told the scotch was unlimited and we could drink as much as we wanted. Each course was beautifully prepared with the Glenlivet 16 year and Bacon being my favorite pairing of the night.

It was definitely another great night at Strip House, I can’t wait until the next one!
