With Brandon at the reigns, Yelapa takes a much needed leap back on the right track since the departure of their previous chef. Brandon gave me a preview of what is to come to the cozy little building next to the towering Momentum Audi off Richmond.

A friendly email reminder happened to hit my inbox that plainly said “Your Strara Gift Certificate is about to Expire!” Since the $20 for $40 of food was expiring within the month, I decided to make the trek out to 249 and Louetta, dangerously close to Bootsie’s. As we arrived around 1:30pm, we were the only table in the restaurant, a definite warning sign for a restaurant like this.

A quick look over the menu and I ordered a steak cooked medium rare that had a smattering of blue cheese coupled with mashed potatoes and some veggies. Girlfriend has a garlic potato soup along with some beef kebobs while my friend went with the kobe burger cooked rare. Everything was rather mediocre and just plain meh. Mind you this is after coming all the way from Sugar Land, so it’s definitely not worth the drive.

2.5/5: Nothing impressive at this upscale joint off 249.

3 Cajun Pigs (Houston, TX)

With the small twitter following and hype building up around one of the newest Food Trailers to hit the Houston scene, 3 Cajun Pigs delivers some solid food.

Last Saturday I decided to round up my girlfriend and friend Camille and head to 3CajunPigs on 1960 in between 249 and 290. Located in the parking lot at OZ Bar, their 8pm launch didn’t come without some bumps along the way. When we arrived at 8pm, we were told that the fold wouldn’t be ready until 45 minutes or so. No problem there, we went down 1960 to kill some time at Ruby Tequila’s with some alcohol to help us with the cold weather.

Nearing the 930/10pm mark the girlfriend and I headed back to the trailer, looked at the menu on the side of the trailer and decided on the “Robert Johnson Crossroads Sandwich” which touts the “sell ya soul for a bite” tagline. With some thin sliced pork loin, waiters collared greens, garlic mayo on a sweet bun, it had a great balance of flavors. I managed to get half of the sandwich down before the oysters from Captain Tom’s and the margaritas caught up with me. All that food didn’t prevent me from tasting more of my order though. I ordered a bowl of their gumbo as well. Described as an old family recipe, the huge chunks of chicken and sausage with rice was pretty darn hearty, although unlike any other variations of gumbo that I’ve had before.

As they look for more locations to serve the Houston and surrounding areas, I’m looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu along with the Boudain Balls and the Chopped Brisket sandwich.

3/5: Add another awesome portable destination to get your eat on..
